Lot and serial control
An item can be lot-controlled, serial-controlled, both, or neither — configured on the item master. Lot control (MTL_LOT_NUMBERS) tracks quantity by batch, commonly for expiration/grade tracking; serial control (MTL_SERIAL_NUMBERS) tracks each physical unit individually with its own current status and location. Transactions against a lot- or serial-controlled item must specify the lot/serial being moved, which is why receiving and shipping screens prompt for it when the item requires it.
